Ulundhu Sadam / Black Gram Dhal Rice (Amma's Fav)


Black Gram dhal is also called as white lentils or black lentils.Generally ,black lentil is considered as the whole urad bean.White lentil is the same lentil with the husk (black skin) removed.Black dhal is full with iron,folic acid,calcium,magnesium,potassium and B vitamins,that simply to meet the requirements of vitamins and minerals.Urad dhal is highly nutritious and is recommended for diabetics.It provides many of the nutritients to our body,such as proteins, fat and carbohydrates.In Indian cooking,it plays vital role to make soft idlies, Makhani gravy ,Porridge and main ingredient in tempering also.



Ulundhu Sadam is amma’s favourite dish,we can call this rice as Ulundhanchoru.In my schooling days,i was staying in hostel.When me and my sister went home for holidays,the first day lunch will be any Non-Veg dish and second day lunch will be this rice.Amma served this rice with Vendhayakuzhambu and Egg combination Or karuvattukuzhambu.Really it tastes heavenly.........(mouthwatering now)......Amma always told that it heals menstrual pain,body pain, and gives instant strength too.....After getting married also,she is used to ask me twice in a month about this rice through phone calls.

Ulundhu Sadham Recipe :
Thats it : Soak rice – Pressure cook all
Soaking time : 30mins 
Cooking time :15 mins  Serves : 2 Persons

Ingredients:

Split Urad dhal with skin
1/2 Cup
Cooking Rice
1 Cup
Water
3 Cups
Garlic Pods
8
Cumin seed (jeera)
1 tsp
Fenugreek
½ tsp
Salt
1 ¼ tsp
Gingelly Oil
2 tsp
Procedure:
1.Wash rice and soak it for 30 mins.Drain the water.


2.Wash Urad dhal well.In a cooker,add Urad dhal, rice, water ,Garlic ,Jeera ,cumin seed,gingelly oil then add salt.Mix well and check for salt.


3.Pressure cook for 5 whistles with medium flame.After it subsides,mix and mash well.

 


Amma’s Traditional Ulundhanchoru is Ready.........!




Serving Suggestions:

Serve with......Karuvattu kuzhambu /Vendhaya kuzhambu and Egg /Vathakuzhambu
