Modhagam (Coconut Filling)

Modhagam is the traditional sweet which is offered to Lord Ganesha during Vinayagar Chathurthi.People use so many varieties of filling/pooranam for stuffing.Already i had posted Modhagam with channa dal pooranam/filling last year.This time i use coconut filling,tastes yummy.Last year itself i searched a lot to buy the moulds here(oman) but i did'nt get.And finally i get 3-4 diifferent moulds from exhibhition during last vocation in india.Finally i used that too.

Modhagam Recipe :

Thats it : Coconut Stuffing – Outer Dough - Steaming
Cooking Time : 45 mins    
Makes : 14Modaks (depends on the mould size)

Ingredients :

Outer dough :

Rice Flour

1 Cup
¼ Cup
Ghee/gingelly oil
1 tsp
½ tsp

For Coconut Filling :

1/2 Cup
Powdered Jaggery
1/2 Cup-
Cardamom pods

Preparation :

 # Grate Coconut

For Coconut Filling
1.Heat a kadai, add powdered jaggery,cardamom pods with immersing level of water.After it dissolves strain it to remove the impurities.

2.Dry roast grated coconut in a pan with low flame till the moisture gone.Now add strained jaggery syrup to it.

3.Cook till it blends and come together as a whole mass with leavig the sides of the pan.Cool down the stuffing.

 For Outer Dough :

4.Heat a pan, add water ,salt and make it boil then switch off. In a wide pan,add rice flour then add water little by little and form a tight dough.Cover with damp cloth till use.

For Modhagam Shaping :

# Be ready with ghee,stuffing & outer dough.

5.Apply ghee to your palms and start rolling the coconut filling/pooranam as a small balls.
(If you are using mould,your ball should be smaller than that)

6.Grease a mould with ghee then insert small amount of rice flour dough and make it to form thin layer inside the mould by pressing.Then stuff coconut filling balls carefully and again close the mould with little dough.
[Make thin layer of dough inside the mould for a greater taste]

If you are not having modhagam mould : Take small amount of dough and make a ball by applying little ghee in your hands.Just pat the dough with fingers till it thins.Take a channa pooranam ball and keep it at the centre of the thin patted dough.Fold together towards upside and just press 4 fingers as a print to form a shape.Check Modhagam with channa dal filling recipe.


6.Boil idly/steaming pot with little water.Arrange all the modaks in the oil greased steaming plate and keep inside.Close the lid.Steam for 10-12 mins.After steaming, modak looks like shiny texture.

 Modhagam is ready !!!
