Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai (Kollu/Horsegram)

Vella Pidi Kozhukattai is the traditional sweet recipe prepared and offered to Lord Ganesha during Vinayagar Chathurthi Festival.Mom prepared this kozhukattai last month for our evening snack,it tastes yummy.Adding kollu / horsegram in kozhukattai is new to me.Even freshers also try this without any fear.Easy to prepare and taste is also devine.

Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai (With Horsegram / Kollu)
Thats It : Jaggery Syrup - Prepare Dough - Shaping & Steam it
Preparation Time : 15-20mins
Steaming Time : 10mins
Yields : 30mini pidi kozhukattais

Ingredients :

For Jaggery Syrup :

Jaggery - 1/2 Cup
Water  - 2 1/4Cup
Sukku powder - 1/4 tsp
Cardamom - 2 Pods

For Kozhukattai Dough :

Rice Flour - 1Cup
Seesame seeds - 1tbsp
Kollu / Horsegram - 2tbsp
Pottukadalai - 2tbsp
Grated Or Coconut Bits - 2 tbsp
Seesame Oil / Ghee - 2tbsp
Salt - 1/4 tsp

[For me it takes 2Cups to knead this flour.Water quantity differs by every brands flour.I used readymade rice flour.For the saftier side i added 2 1/4 Cup water to the jaggery syrup (means little extra)]

Procedure : 

# Dry roast the kollu till it starts popping.Keep aside.[Crush it coarsely or directly use the roasted kollu].


# Roast seesame seeds till it starts popping and aroma comes.Dont burn it by over roasting.Keep aside.

# Add 1/4 tsp of ghee to the pan ,fry the coconut bits till it browns.Keep aside.

1.Heat a pan with crushed jaggery,water,sukku powder,cardamom pods and cook till the jaggery dissolves.Strain it to remove the impurities present in jaggery.Keep aside.

2.Meanwhile,In a wide bowl,add rice flour,pottukadalai,,roasted kollu,seesame seeds,coconut bits,salt and roughly mix it.Now slowly add hot jaggery syrup to it and mix it by spatula.
Now add 1/2 tbsp of ghee and knead by your hands to make non-sticky dough.[Dont rest the dough for more time otherwise it dries or you can cover it by any damp/wet cloth.

3.Grease your hand,take small amount of dough portion and roll it as round shape.Now fold your hands and press little tight till the finger impression formed.

4.Arrange the kozhukattai dough in ghee/gingelly oil  greased idli plates.After the water starts boil in the steaming pot,arrange the plates and close the lid.Steam it for 10mins.
Steamed kozhukattais looks like shiny texture outside.

Traditional Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai is Ready !!!
