Kalkandu Pongal is a popular sweet pongal which is offered in temples.This Sugar candy pongal is very easy and tastes divine.Adding milk results creamy texture and rich taste pongal.
You can use big blocks of sugar candy or small pieces to prepare this.
I want to tell some interesting thing about this bowl.It was bought from Indian Pavillion,Global Village,Dubai last month.We went there as a vacation trip.This singing bowls are made up of 5-8metals for relaxation purpose.They had given one wooden piece along with this bowl,if you are making continuous circles at the rim of the bowl by touching,the bowl will produce vibration and sounds too thats why its called Singing Bowl.

Sugar Candy (Kalkandu) 1/2Cup (Rock version or smaller sized)
Raw rice / Pacharisi 1/2Cup
Moong Dal / Siruparupu 2tbsp
Water 1 1/2Cup
Boiled Milk 1Cup
To Temper :
Ghee / Nei 2tbsp
Cardamom Powder / Elakkai Podi 1/4tsp
#If you are using rock candy,crush/powder it then use.
#For small sized sugar candy,use as it is or powder it.
1.Heat a cooker pan on low flame,add moong dal and dry roast it for 2mins or until it turns light golden brown in colour.Switch Off the flame.
Add raw rice with dal and wash ,rinse it for 3times.Drai the water completely.
2.Add 1 1/2Cups of water,1/2Cup of milk into the washed rice & dal,close the lid and pressure cook for 4whistles on low-medium flame.
3.Meanwhile,heat a seeding pan,add 1tbsp of ghee,add broken cashews,fry till light golden brown then add raisins,after it puffs up switch off the flame.Keep aside.
4.After pressure releases,add sugar candy(am using small sized,so add it directly),mix it & mash it slightly.Now the sugar candy melts with the heat of rice and dal.
5.Heat it again on low flame,add remaining 1/2Cup of milk,cook it for 2mins or everything blends well,now add 1tbsp of ghee.
Add fried cashews and raisins,cardamom Powder mix it.Switch off the flame.
Kalkandu Pongal is ready !!!
1.If you are using rock sugar candy,crush it.You can powder crushed sugar candy using mixie.
